Job Description
Provide high-quality ultrasound imaging of the heart and great vessels for adult patients. Assist with exercise and non-exercise stress testing and perform other related duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform two-dimensional ultrasound studies of the heart and great vessels.
- Identify EKG abnormalities and arrhythmias.
- Use complementary imaging and Doppler techniques to investigate clinical questions.
- Measure cardiac dimensions using M-Mode technique.
- Assess severity of valvular insufficiencies with color flow Doppler.
- Evaluate blood flow through the heart, including stenosis, regurgitation, and shunts using pulsed and continuous-wave Doppler.
- Use contrast echocardiography when standard imaging is suboptimal.
- Evaluate ventricular systolic and diastolic functions and document wall motion abnormalities.
- Recognize congenital heart malformations and acquired pathologies.
- Complete studies according to updated protocols and provide additional views and measurements as needed.
- Correlate clinical history with exams and consult cardiologists for clarification.
- Prepare and assist patients for dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiograms.
- Assist cardiologists with transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE).
- Communicate results to cardiologists and respond to questions promptly.
- Maintain monthly correlation studies and statistics.
- Troubleshoot and report equipment failures.
- Participate in mobile echo/vascular services regionally and callback rotation.
- Assist with functional, pharmacological cardiolite, and echocardiography stress testing.
- Document procedures accurately and assess patient ability to perform tests.
- Recognize lethal arrhythmias and provide crisis assessments, notifying physicians as necessary.
- Complete quarterly competency in stress lab, Holter monitoring, and event monitoring.
- Demonstrate proficiency in pediatric echocardiograms.
Required Qualifications
- Echo Technician with a minimum of 3 years of experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate's Degree in Ultrasound
- Certification by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) in Echocardiography
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Proficiency in recognizing abnormalities in cardiac structure and function, distinguishing normal from abnormal findings, and recognizing imaging artifacts
- Proficiency in conducting pediatric echocardiograms
Additional Skills
- Operate ultrasound equipment and controls to optimize image quality
- Select appropriate transducers for cardiac structures
- Obtain and document relevant patient history and clinical data
- Use a segmental approach to image cardiac structures from multiple echocardiographic windows (parasternal, apical, subcostal, suprasternal notch)
