Histology Tech

Location: Houston, Texas
Employment Type: Clinical Allied Registry
Contract Length: 20 weeks


Job Description

  • Validate specimen identification and ensure appropriateness of sample type and size.
  • Prioritize workload according to handling protocols and established turnaround times.
  • Process specimens using tissue processors, following correct order of solutions and programs.
  • Embed tissues and section at least 30 blocks per hour on the microtome to the correct thickness.
  • Produce correct number of sections and slides for each specimen or block type with high quality (no more than one documented complaint from a pathologist related to poor quality).
  • Perform routine staining procedures including AFB, MSN, Gram, and Oro on mounted tissue sections or body fluid preparations.
  • Prioritize and multitask staining procedures to ensure timely and productive processing.
  • Coverslip slides at a minimum rate of 3 slides per minute; label and distribute slides for pathologist interpretation promptly.
  • Assist with liver biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and retrieve fresh specimens in various labs and suites.
  • Perform inquiry functions and troubleshoot technical, specimen number, and result issues.
  • Emphasis on quality over speed in routine histology.

Schedule

  • 4 AM shift, Monday through Friday

Required Qualifications

  • Histology Technologist with a minimum of 2 years of experience, including experience within the last year.
  • ASCP certification.
  • Associate's degree in Science or Histology.
