Polysomno Technologist
Location: Bloomington, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Shift: Night
Hours: 10 hours/day, 40 hours/week
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
A Polysomnographic Technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and home sleep apnea testing (HSAT), diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and patient care. The technologist also provides sleep-related education and support to patients and families and oversees other sleep center staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Document patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing.
- Review and verify departmental orders and insurance/prior authorization.
- Review patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity.
- Acquire additional information from patients or providers as needed.
- Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting, desensitization, and education.
- Prepare patients for testing and select appropriate equipment.
- Document routine observations during testing and ensure data quality.
- Correlate physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation.
- Perform equipment calibration, cleaning, and disinfection following infection control policies.
- Provide age-specific care for all populations seen in the Sleep Lab.
- Implement patient safety and sleep-related therapeutic interventions.
- Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events (respiratory, cardiac, limb movements, arousals) using professional guidelines.
- Generate accurate reports and analyze complex situations.
- Support quality and performance improvement initiatives.
- Perform ancillary testing such as oximetry, actigraphy, and home sleep apnea testing.
- Follow protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT).
- Maintain effective professional communication and relationships.
- Assist with supply requests and maintain work area orderliness.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Associate's Degree in Polysomnographic Technology OR
- Completion of a certificate program in Polysomnographic Technology
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Polysomnographer, including experience within the last year
Certifications & Licensure
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association)
- Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) OR Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT)
