Description
Surgical Assistant 1 - OR
Location: Urbana, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied
Shift: Day
Hours: 10 hours/day, 40 hours/week
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Assistant is an integral part of the perioperative team, assisting the surgeon during procedures. May also function as the first or second surgical technician or second circulator under RN supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a sterile environment by applying aseptic principles.
- Demonstrate competency in technical and psychomotor skills, judgment, and knowledge.
- Provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients as needed.
- Organize and coordinate supplies and equipment for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and self, adhering to safety and legal policies.
- Apply knowledge of normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology.
- Perform scrubbing duties and assist in room turnover.
- Assist with supply ordering, inventory control, and supply chain management.
- Collaborate with surgeons and OR team to prepare trays, instruments, and supplies.
- Participate in Quality Assessment, Performance Improvement, and Infection Control activities.
- Assist with patient positioning and supplies during procedures.
- Perform closure of all layers of skin using appropriate techniques.
- Provide scrubbing instruction to medical students, residents, and other learners.
- Assist surgeons during procedures (e.g., suctioning, tying, camera holding, retracting).
- Primarily support orthopedic surgeries.
- Client credentialing required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Surgical Technologist license in Illinois
- Surgical Technologist with at least 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)
- Certified Surgical Technician (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
