Job Summary
Provide high-quality ultrasound imaging of the heart and great vessels for adult patients. Assist with exercise and non-exercise stress testing and perform other related duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform two-dimensional ultrasound studies of the heart and great vessels.
- Identify EKG abnormalities and arrhythmias.
- Use complementary imaging and Doppler techniques to investigate clinical questions.
- Apply M-Mode technique for precise cardiac measurements.
- Estimate severity of valvular insufficiencies using color flow Doppler.
- Assess blood flow abnormalities including stenosis, regurgitation, and shunts.
- Use contrast echocardiography when standard imaging is suboptimal.
- Evaluate ventricular systolic and diastolic function and document wall motion abnormalities.
- Recognize congenital heart malformations and acquired pathologies.
- Complete studies according to updated protocols and provide additional views or measurements as needed.
- Correlate clinical history with exams and consult cardiologists for clarification.
- Prepare and instruct patients for dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiograms.
- Assist cardiologists with transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE).
- Communicate results and respond to cardiologist inquiries promptly.
- Maintain monthly correlation studies and statistics.
- Troubleshoot and report equipment failures.
- Participate in regional mobile echo/vascular services and callback rotation.
- Perform functional, pharmacological cardiolite, and echocardiography stress testing.
- Document procedures accurately and assess patient ability to perform tests.
- Interpret and clarify physician orders.
- Provide thorough patient assessments in crisis situations and notify physicians as necessary.
- Demonstrate proficiency in recognizing lethal arrhythmias.
- Complete quarterly competency evaluations in stress lab, Holter monitoring, and event monitoring.
- Conduct pediatric echocardiograms with proficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of applicable echocardiography experience.
- Associate's Degree in Ultrasound.
- Certification from either:
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or
- Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) in Echocardiography.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Proficient knowledge of patient positioning, breathing techniques, and transducer placement for optimal cardiac imaging.
- Ability to recognize abnormalities in cardiac structure and function, distinguish normal from abnormal findings, and identify imaging artifacts.
- Knowledge of gross and sectional anatomy.
- Strong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, email, web browsing, and use of software-driven testing machines and digital archive systems.
- Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).
