Job Description
- Validate specimen identification and sample appropriateness.
- Prioritize workload according to handling protocols and turnaround times.
- Process specimens using tissue processors, following correct solution order and programs.
- Embed tissues and section at least 30 blocks per hour on the microtome to correct thickness.
- Produce correct number of sections and slides per specimen/block type with high quality (no more than one documented complaint from pathologist).
- Perform routine staining procedures including AFB, MSN, Gram, and Oro on tissue sections or body fluid preparations.
- Prioritize and multitask staining procedures for timely processing.
- Coverslip slides at a minimum rate of 3 slides per minute; label and distribute slides promptly for pathologist interpretation.
- Assist with liver biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and retrieve fresh specimens in various labs (main lab, cryostat lab, NGI suite, CT suite, Electron Microscopy).
- Perform inquiry functions and troubleshoot technical/specimen/result issues.
- Emphasize quality over speed in routine histology.
- Knowledge of hospital and laboratory operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound independent judgment.
- Basic computer skills and working knowledge of special stains and paraffin tissue sectioning.
- Ability to operate tissue processors, stainers, embedding units, cryostats, microscopes, and centrifuges at a basic level.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Science or Histology.
- ASCP certification.
- Minimum 2 years of paid histology experience as a Histology Technologist.
- Histology Technologist experience within the last year.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM (8 hours per day, 40 hours per week)
Contract Length
- Approximately 14 weeks
