Duration: 13 Weeks (with possibility of extension)
Location: New York, NY
Schedule: Full-time, 35 hours/week (Monday–Friday)
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and clinically driven Prior Authorization Pharmacist to support medical management and utilization review functions. This role focuses on evaluating pharmacy and medical prior authorization requests, ensuring appropriate medication use, and improving patient outcomes through clinical review and care management. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical judgment, managed care experience, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Review pharmacy and medical prior authorization and appeal requests and render coverage determinations based on formulary guidelines, benefits, and clinical criteria
• Utilize clinical judgment to ensure safe, appropriate, and cost-effective medication use
• Respond to internal and external inquiries related to prior authorization decisions, including weekends/holidays as needed
• Identify and address inappropriate utilization trends during claims and authorization reviews
• Perform audits of reviewed cases to ensure compliance with clinical and operational standards
• Conduct medication reviews to promote safe and effective therapy for members
• Support quality improvement initiatives within the department and organization
• Respond to pharmacy benefit-related inquiries from providers and stakeholders
• Participate in Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) meetings and contribute to clinical discussions
Required Qualifications
• Minimum 1 year of experience as a pharmacist
• Experience in managed care or utilization management
• Experience working with Medicaid and/or Exchange programs
• Familiarity with pharmacy dispensing systems, IV/sterile processing
• IV Room Experience
• Knowledge of EMR (Electronic Medical Records System)
Education & Licensure
• Bachelor’s or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required
• Active New York State Pharmacist License (NYSED) required
