Position Overview:

Performs pharmaceutical procedures for medication preparation and distribution that ensures safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication therapy. Prepares, compounds, packages, labels, and dispenses medication, nutritional products, and IV admixture and solutions. Adheres to all standards, procedures, cleaning protocols, and infection control polices to maintain a safe and sterile medication area, clean rooms, and laminar flow hoods. Assists with medicine and supplies inventory management and control, including maintaining adequate stock levels, checking accuracy of pricing, and completing required regulatory documentation. Exercises sound judgment and developed clinical skills to provide pharmaceutical support to the patient's plan of care based on the diagnosis in a timely manner. May also be responsible for performing specific tasks and/or orienting other staff to the department. Able to serve as the primary trainer and competency administrator for new staff for inpatient pharmacy technician tasks including complex, high cost, and chemotherapy compounding.
Able to perform advanced functions such as patient medication history interviews and EMR documentation independent of performance in other pharmacy tasks. Ability to independently research and resolve ADS Pyxis controlled substance discrepancies and complete resolution process with nursing/anesthesia/or other clinical users. Exercises sound judgment and developed clinical skills to provide pharmaceutical support to the patient's plan of care based on the diagnosis in a timely manner. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety. May also be responsible for performing specific tasks and/or orient other staff to the department.

Job Description:

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

PHARMACY SERVICES:
• Assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services including drug preparation, distribution, inventory control, quality control, and proper documentation according to policy and procedure.
• Performs billing, pricing, record keeping, and provision of services required to meet regulatory requirements.
• Maintains records of drug distribution, works with vendors to requisition or return drugs.
• Accurately interprets, transcribes and dispenses orders/prescriptions, under the direction of a pharmacist.
• Mentors and fosters a constructive teaching environment that helps students, interns, and Pharmacy Technicians gain competencies and skills. Conducts specialty training and meets competency trainer requirements.

CLERICAL:
• Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones; updating patient information; or retrieving, entering, and revising patient Electronic Health Records (EHR).
• Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patient in medical and departmental records as required.


SAFETY:
• Participates in quality improvement processes, including updating and revision of safety and procedure manuals and interdisciplinary projects.
• Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment by complying with policies, procedures and regulations.
• Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.


COMPLIANCE:
• Maintains strictest confidence of all patients Protected Health Information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
• Assists the Pharmacists in preparing, administering, and documenting medications and treatments in accordance with state and federal regulations.
• Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by assisting Pharmacists in monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation.
• Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.
• Develops hospital staff's pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs, training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals.

FULFILLMENT CENTER

  • Members of the Fulfillment Center float pool report to work at various locations within a designated service area as assigned




EDUCATION:

Other: Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.


CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

PHRMTECHR-Registered Pharmacy Technician.

OR PHARMC-Certified Pharmacy Technician.

OR PHARMT-Pharmacy Technician.


TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

1year recent relevant experience.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of medical terminology, generic and trade pharmaceutical names, pharmaceutical calculations and laws and regulations.

Knowledge and understanding of different Pharmacy practice settings, including narcotic delivery and procedures.

Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing, and record keeping of medications.

Requires a basic working knowledge of legal requirements and accreditation standards including National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), The Joint Commission (TJC), Title XXII, United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP).

Ability to perform basic pharmacy buyer duties.

Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.

Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), related pharmaceutical technology, EHR, and EPIC.

Carry out calculations and execute basic math skills needed for common dosage determination.

Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.

Identify, evaluate and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.

Ensure the privacy of each patient’s PHI.

Build and collaborate relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.

Pay Range is $37.82 to $47.27 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
