Job Summary:
Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians. Produces images of internal body tissues to help physicians diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions such as heart disease, pregnancy and cancer. May supervise and mentor ultrasound personnel and students. Maintains equipment.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Diploma/Certificate from an approved Ultrasound college/school: Required
- Bachelor's Degree in radiologic technology or equivalent (some certifications will require Bachelor's): Preferred
- Three years' sonography experience: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in Abdomen (AB) or Obstetrics (OB) and Vascular (RVT); or Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in Abdomen (AB) or Obstetrics (OB) and a registered vascular specialist (RVS) by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI); or Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Sonography (S) and (VS):: Required
- Certification in general ultrasound or vascular ultrasound: Preferred
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or ARRT-Sonography (ARRT-S) or ARRT-Vascular Sonography (ARRT-VS) or CCI Registered Vascular Specialist (CCI RVS): Required
Facility Specific License/Certifications:
- Hospital Fire and Life Safety (HLFS): Required
Department Specific License/Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQI BLS) certification: Required
Essential Functions:
- Uses ultrasound equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves to a prescribed area of the patient’s body and capture quality images that describe the composition, shape and motion of tissues, organs, vessels and pathology. Summarizes, documents, verifies and presents images, findings, calculations and measurements to physicians for diagnoses. Adheres to ultrasonic diagnostic procedures, precautions and standards.
- Provides direct patient care, including assessing patient condition and ability to cooperate. Positions patients and equipment, prepares patients for procedures and continually monitors and records vital signs. Observes for reactions and signs of impending complications and intervening as needed.
- Maintains accurate records, files and billing information. Ensures the integrity of patient medical images and data while adhering to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations.
- Trains, supervises and mentors students and ultrasound personnel. Manages staff scheduling as needed. Continually monitors for and implements performance improvement opportunities.
- Performs routine maintenance of ultrasound equipment and manages supply inventory.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
