Job Opportunity: Physical Therapist (Rehabilitation Therapy)

Location: Haines, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Key Requirements

  • Licensure: Must have an active Alaska Physical Therapist license at time of submission.
  • Education:
    • Entry-level qualifying Master's or Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program, OR
    • Graduate from an APTA-approved Baccalaureate program with 2 years of proven work and continuing education experience equivalent to a Master's level knowledge base.
  • Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in Physical Therapy (based on education and work experience requirements).
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required.

Job Description

  • Provide outpatient Physical Therapy evaluations and treatments focused on improving patients' functional abilities.
  • Responsible for patient assessment, evaluation, establishing plans of care, and therapeutic interventions for a wide range of ages and diagnoses.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including attending care conferences and communicating with referring providers and nurses.
  • Document patient encounters, treatment plans, recommendations, and prognoses according to hospital policies.
  • Supervise and direct support staff, students, or interns as needed.
  • Develop and implement patient education and home exercise programs to promote self-care and independence.
  • Assist senior staff with administrative duties, clinic operations, and specialty/research areas.
  • Maintain clinical supplies and equipment, and stay current with billing procedures (Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payers).
  • Educate staff and patients/families on therapy issues and therapeutic exercises.
  • Participate in clinical education, in-services, and continuing education activities.
  • Adhere to regulatory and practice standards set by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
  • Follow confidentiality, quality assurance, and safety standards.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work may involve small spaces, fast pace, and interaction with diverse and sometimes challenging personalities.
  • Exposure to infectious organisms possible; use of precautions and protective equipment required.
  • Potential exposure to latex in the workplace.
  • Physically demanding: may require repetitive or heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) and various physical positions.
  • Services may be provided in multiple settings including inpatient, outpatient, off-site, community events, home visits, and remote locations.
  • Occasional travel to remote areas by boat or plane for multiple days, possibly in harsh weather conditions.

Additional Notes

  • Must have flu vaccinations.
  • Start date contingent on fingerprint processing (approximately 5 weeks after submission).
  • Must live at least 50 miles away from the facility location to be eligible.
  • This position is covered under the Indian Child Protection Act.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of musculoskeletal physiology, assessment techniques, and treatment planning.
  • Skilled in fitting and training patients with adaptive devices (splints, braces, orthoses, durable medical equipment).
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including ability to explain complex PT concepts in simple terms.
  • Proficient with computers and multiple software applications relevant to clinical documentation and billing.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in patient care, workplace safety, and employee relations.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
