Registered Nurse - Emergency Department

Location: Sitka, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Summary

The Registered Nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages, requiring professional knowledge and the ability to work independently. Responsibilities include implementing safe, therapeutic, and efficient care, prioritizing patient needs, administering medications, managing nursing care plans, and collaborating with healthcare team members. The nurse is accountable for clinical decisions made during shifts and supervises CNA/Tech staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care based on provider orders, standards of care, and hospital policies.
  • Independently make clinical decisions and manage patient care during shifts.
  • Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
  • Assess patients through interviews, observation, and nursing process; document findings.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans in coordination with the healthcare team.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff; participate in patient care conferences and in-services.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to nursing staff and support personnel.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and comply with scheduling and competency requirements.
  • Respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Valid, current, full, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alaska at time of submission.
  • One year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in emergency nursing or specialty area preferred.

Certifications

  • BLS and PALS required upon hire.
  • ACLS certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Additional certifications such as TNCC/ATCN and NRP may be required depending on specialty area.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of nursing care principles, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ability to recognize and respond promptly to emergent patient conditions.
  • Familiarity with pharmaceuticals, their effects, and complications.
  • Proficiency in operating and monitoring medical equipment (e.g., defibrillators, monitors, ventilators).
  • Ability to assist with emergency procedures (e.g., intubations, arterial line setup).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Leadership skills and ability to work cooperatively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Ability to implement evidence-based nursing interventions and recognize adverse signs and symptoms.

Additional Information

  • Must have or obtain flu vaccination.
  • Start date will be no less than 5 weeks after fingerprint processing.
  • Applicants must live at least 50 miles away from the work location.
  • Housing and travel arrangements are not provided.
