Description
Medical Laboratory Scientist - Contract Opportunity in Alaska
Location: Wrangell, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Summary
- Perform a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services under minimal supervision.
- Provide 24-hour laboratory coverage including shift work, nights, and weekend call.
- Conduct all levels of testing including CLIA-defined high complexity testing.
- Work with patients across all age groups: infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Responsible for technical aspects of the laboratory, including complex problem-solving and quality control.
- Write and update procedures, establish quality control programs, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Train new employees and provide ongoing education to laboratory staff.
- Assist with competency evaluations and process improvement activities.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper inventory levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and interpret high complexity laboratory testing.
- Troubleshoot and resolve inconsistencies in patient test results.
- Provide specialized expertise in microbiology, transfusion medicine, molecular biology, and infectious disease safety.
- Maintain laboratory instruments and ensure quality control.
- Prepare laboratory for regulatory inspections.
- Review and assign tasks to other laboratory staff.
- Educate medical and nursing staff on laboratory practices.
- Participate in continuing education programs.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field (or equivalent experience substituting for education).
- Minimum of 1 year progressive clinical experience or 1 year hospital internship post-degree.
Licensure/Certification
- Medical Technologist (ASCP) OR Clinical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) OR equivalent national certification.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of all levels of laboratory testing including CLIA high complexity testing.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and various laboratory software.
- Understanding of laboratory equipment operation and quality control procedures.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements including CLIA, Joint Commission, and CAP.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to interpret lab reports accurately and troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to work independently and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to train staff and support continuing education.
Additional Information
- Must submit 2 fingerprint cards immediately upon job acceptance; background check clearance required before starting.
- Candidates must live at least 50 miles away from the work location.
- Housing and travel expenses are not provided.
