Description
Registered Nurse - Emergency Department - Night Shift
Location: Wrangell, Alaska
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour night shifts
Hours per Week: 36
Position Summary
- Provide nursing care for patients of all ages, independently managing assignments based on provider orders, standards of care, and hospital policies.
- Make clinical decisions independently during shifts and maintain accountability for all actions.
- Supervise and delegate tasks to CNAs/Techs.
- Deliver safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with multisystem diseases and treatment complications.
- Administer age-specific medications and therapeutics accurately.
- Coordinate patient care activities with physicians and healthcare team members.
- Educate patients and families on tests, procedures, disease processes, and coping strategies.
- Document patient assessments, care plans, progress, and responses thoroughly and accurately.
- Participate in patient care conferences and contribute to unit goal setting and staff meetings.
- Support orientation and mentoring of new staff, travelers, and students.
- Comply with all hospital policies, procedures, and patient care standards.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Valid, current, full, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alaska.
- One year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
- Prior experience in emergency nursing or specialty area preferred.
Certifications
- BLS and PALS required upon hire.
- ACLS certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
- TNCC/ATCN, NRP, and other specialty certifications required within first 6 months and maintained bi-annually as applicable.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of nursing care principles, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Ability to recognize and respond promptly to emergent patient conditions.
- Familiarity with pharmaceuticals, including effects and side effects relevant to emergency care.
- Proficiency in operating and monitoring medical equipment such as defibrillators, monitors, ventilators, EKG machines, and specialty emergency equipment.
- Ability to assist with emergency procedures (e.g., intubations, arterial line setup, thoracentesis).
- Strong oral and written communication skills for accurate documentation and effective teamwork.
- Leadership skills to guide and support other staff members.
- Ability to implement evidence-based nursing interventions and recognize adverse signs promptly.
Additional Information
- Must submit two fingerprint cards immediately upon acceptance.
- Current Alaska nursing license required.
- Flu vaccination required.
- Applicants must live at least 50 miles away from the work location.
- Housing and travel expenses are not provided.

- Ability to work independently and handle emergency situations calmly.
- Participate in at least 50% of departmental staff meetings and ongoing education programs.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Adhere to dress code and complete all mandatory training and competency checks.
- Provide constructive feedback and assist in resolving workplace issues through appropriate channels.
