Medical Lab Technologist - Weekend Night Shift

Location: Pagosa Springs, Colorado
Employment Type: Contract
Assignment Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Weekend Nights (Friday through Sunday, 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.)
Weekly Hours: 36 hours/week


Position Summary

Seeking an experienced Medical Lab Scientist (MLS/MT) for a weekend night shift assignment in a rural Critical Access Hospital laboratory. The role requires an independent, confident generalist capable of managing laboratory workflow with minimal supervision. The candidate will perform a broad range of testing across multiple disciplines and support urgent and emergent needs.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory testing in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, urinalysis, coagulation, and serology.
  • Analyze, verify, and report test results, including critical values.
  • Prioritize testing and workflow during weekend night shifts.
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing as needed.
  • Maintain, operate, troubleshoot, and perform quality control on laboratory instrumentation.
  • Document quality control, calibrations, maintenance, and corrective actions.
  • Use Laboratory Information System and Cerner EHR for documentation and reporting.
  • Communicate effectively with Emergency Department providers, nursing staff, and clinical teams.
  • Support urgent and emergent testing needs in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, safety, quality, and patient care standards.
  • Work independently during weekend night coverage after orientation.

Required Qualifications

  • Medical Technologist with a minimum of 5 years of experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment.
  • ASCP MLS/MT or AMT certification.
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field, with completed clinical training.
  • Previous independent night shift or weekend shift experience.
  • Experience with Cerner EHR system.

Additional Information

  • Prior travel experience is required; this cannot be the candidate’s first travel assignment.
  • Must be comfortable working independently after standard traveler orientation without ongoing additional staffing support.
  • Floating within scope may be required, including phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Must be adaptable to a rural healthcare environment.
  • Must support urgent and emergent testing needs professionally and promptly.
