Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) - Contract

Location: Salmon, Idaho
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days, Monday to Thursday, 9 hours/day (36 hours/week)


Job Summary

Provide direct patient care to neonate through geriatric populations in the surgical environment. Responsibilities include pre-operative, intra-operative, PACU, and post-operative care. Collaborate continuously with surgeons and anesthesia providers regarding patient condition. Assist with surgical equipment maintenance and inventory. Act as a patient advocate throughout all perioperative phases.


Key Responsibilities

  • Adapt nursing procedures to meet individual patient needs across all age groups (neonate to geriatric).
  • Prepare patients for surgery in cooperation with anesthesia providers.
  • Begin and continue discharge planning and patient/family education throughout perioperative care.
  • Assess and reassess patients’ behavioral and physiological status; document findings clearly and timely.
  • Monitor cardio-respiratory systems and manage pain using appropriate techniques and education.
  • Ensure completion of pre-op checklists before surgery (H&P, informed consent, test results, surgical site verification).
  • Prepare and position patients safely; maintain surgical asepsis before, during, and after procedures.
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain operating rooms according to infection control standards.
  • Administer medications and parenteral fluids safely per hospital policies.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care; provide education to patients and families.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anesthetic drugs, surgical equipment, specimen handling, and surgical counts.
  • Communicate intra-operative patient status to PACU nurses and surgical team.
  • Participate in instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring.
  • Perform duties of circulating RN and scrub RN (once trained to scrub).

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Idaho
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Certifications (Preferred/Additional)

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Advanced Trauma Training (ATT)

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced surgical setting requiring continuous communication with surgical and anesthesia teams.
  • Involves physical tasks such as patient positioning and equipment handling.
  • Requires adherence to strict infection control and safety protocols.

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not specified as a requirement.
  • This role requires the ability to perform both circulating and scrub RN duties after appropriate training.
