Registered Nurse (ICU) - Travel Assignment

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Provide nursing care in a 28-bed mixed ICU unit with patient ratios of 1:2 or 1:3, including holding inpatient PCU/med-surg admissions.
  • Expected to work 3 twelve-hour shifts per week, including every other weekend and holidays on a rotating schedule.
  • Travelers are the first to float and may be assigned to Emergency Department or PCU to manage ICU or PCU holds.
  • Bedside shift report is required for every patient handoff.

Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Manage up to 1-3 ICU patients, including ventilated patients.
  • Proficient in reading telemetry strips.
  • Administer respiratory treatments (inhalers, nebulizers) outside the ICU.
  • Procedures include care for post-op day 0 CABG patients, Impellas, balloon pumps, Swan-Ganz catheters, advanced hemodynamics, neuro procedures (aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, EVDs, bolts, Codman), and use of Artic Sun for induced hypothermia.
  • Advanced skills needed: CRRT, advanced hemodynamics, phlebotomy.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 3 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year
  • One completed travel nursing assignment
  • Certifications required: ACLS, BLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Comfort managing patients on ventilators
  • Experience with CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy), advanced hemodynamics, and phlebotomy
  • Ability to administer breathing treatments (inhalers and nebulizers)
  • Experience caring for post-operative CABG patients
  • Experience with Impella devices, balloon pumps, Swan-Ganz catheters, and EVDs (External Ventricular Drains)

Work Environment & Equipment

  • Unit uses mobile phones for each care team member and mobile computer workstations on wheels.
  • Documentation system: Meditech.
  • Dress code: Navy uniform required.

Additional Information

  • Opportunity to train in Neuro ICU and Cardiovascular ICU nursing, including care for patients with head and neck flap procedures.
  • The unit is one of 14 programs nationally offering specialized training in these areas.
