Medical Technologist - Contract

Location: Salmon, Idaho
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days, 10 hours/day (40 hours/week)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Summary

Perform complex laboratory testing to support diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions. Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable test results across multiple laboratory disciplines including chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, immunology, and transfusion services. Maintain compliance with regulatory and quality standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform specialized testing and evaluate test validity, identifying abnormal or critical results.
  • Run and review quality control (QC), participate in proficiency testing, and document corrective actions.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory analyzers.
  • Verify proper specimen collection, handling, and processing; resolve specimen-related issues.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare providers and laboratory staff regarding test interpretation and critical values.
  • Follow safety, infection control, and chemical hygiene protocols.
  • Provide technical guidance to Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs), lab assistants, students, and new staff.
  • Prioritize testing based on clinical urgency to support efficient turnaround times.
  • Ensure immediate communication of critical laboratory values to appropriate clinical teams.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for audits and inspections.
  • Be available for on-call emergency lab services 2-3 nights/days per week routinely, and 3-4 days/nights per week as needed for coverage.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Medical Technologist, including experience within the last year.
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of laboratory methodologies, instrumentation, and clinical significance of test results.
  • Ability to analyze complex data, troubleshoot, and apply critical thinking.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems and electronic health records.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and ethical laboratory practices.
  • Ability to return to work within 15 minutes when on call.
