Description
Pediatric Physical Therapist (Contract)
Location: Sitka, Alaska
Specialty: Rehabilitation Therapy
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Key Requirements
- Must have an active Alaska Physical Therapy license at time of submission
- Pediatric experience is required
- Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Must submit 2 fingerprint cards upon acceptance
- Must have flu vaccinations
- Valid driver's license required
- Must live at least 50+ miles away from the work location
Job Overview
Provide pediatric physical therapy evaluations and treatments focused on improving patients' functional abilities. Services are delivered in compliance with hospital standards, licensure requirements, regulatory and practice standards of Physical Therapy, and guidelines established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Responsibilities
Clinical (70%)
- Assess, evaluate, and diagnose pediatric patients
- Develop, implement, and modify therapy treatment plans with goals
- Provide direct physical therapy services to both inpatient and outpatient populations
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including attending care conferences and communicating with referring providers
- Document patient encounters, treatment plans, recommendations, and progress according to policies
- Provide patient and family education, including home exercise programs tailored to individual needs
- Supervise support staff, students, or interns as needed
- Ensure cultural sensitivity in patient interactions and education
Administrative & Operational (10%)
- Assist senior staff with clinic operations and specialty/research areas
- Maintain clinical supplies and equipment
- Stay current with billing procedures (Medicare, Medicaid, third-party payers) to support reimbursement
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of clinical space
Community & Outreach (10%)
- Provide therapy services at off-site locations such as schools, community clinics, senior centers, patients’ homes, and other community settings
- Participate in health promotion projects and community health teams
- Conduct home assessments for therapy plan implementation and equipment fitting
- Occasional multi-day travel to remote locations by boat or small plane, sometimes in harsh weather conditions
- Use video conferencing for patient encounters, training, and administrative duties
Education & Training (5%)
- Educate staff on physical therapy issues and provide patient/family instruction on therapeutic exercises and equipment
- Participate in clinical education, in-services, and continuing education activities
- Provide therapy consultations, presentations, and in-services to medical staff and interdisciplinary teams
- Adhere to confidentiality, quality assurance, and regulatory standards
Other Duties (5%)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Skills
- Entry-level qualifying Master’s or Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program, or Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience and continuing education
- Licensed Physical Therapist in Alaska
- Knowledge of musculoskeletal physiology, assessment techniques, and treatment planning
- Skilled in fitting and training patients with adaptive devices (splints, braces, orthoses, durable medical equipment)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to explain complex therapy concepts in simple terms
- Proficient with computers and multiple software applications, including use of new technologies (laptops, tablets, imaging devices)
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including patients, families, teachers, and community members
- Physical ability to safely deliver treatment techniques and assist patient mobility
- Sound judgment in patient care, workplace safety, and employee relations
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- May work in small spaces and at a demanding pace with a variety of people and situations requiring tact and good judgment
- Exposure to infectious organisms possible; use of precautions and protective equipment required
- Latex may be present in the workplace
- May require repetitive or heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) and physically demanding movements
- Services provided in multiple settings: inpatient, outpatient, off-site, community events, home visits, and remote locations
- Occasional travel to remote areas by boat or plane for multiple days, possibly in harsh weather

- Must demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adhere to all regulatory and professional standards
