Assistant Director of Physical Therapy
Position Overview
West River Health Services (WRHS), a nationally recognized rural healthcare system in Hettinger, North Dakota, is seeking an Assistant Director of Physical Therapy to support and help lead its multidisciplinary rehabilitation department.
This role blends hands-on patient care with clinical leadership and operational support, serving inpatient, outpatient, and community-based populations within a critical access hospital environment. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director of Physical Therapy to ensure high clinical standards, staff development, regulatory compliance, and efficient departmental operations.
WRHS is known for delivering “big city medical care with small-town friendliness” and serves communities throughout southwest North Dakota and northwest South Dakota.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Provide comprehensive physical therapy evaluations and treatment across inpatient and outpatient settings
Develop, implement, and progress individualized treatment plans
Deliver evidence-based interventions including:
Therapeutic exercise
Manual therapy
Balance and gait training
Neuromuscular re-education
Modalities as appropriate
Treat a diverse caseload including orthopedics, post-surgical, geriatrics, and neurological conditions
Educate patients and families on home exercise programs and injury prevention
Leadership & Department Support
Support the Director of Physical Therapy with day-to-day departmental operations
Provide clinical mentorship and guidance to Physical Therapists, PTAs, and rehab staff
Assist with:
Staff onboarding and training
Clinical competency development
Schedule coordination and productivity oversight
Serve as a clinical resource for complex cases
Promote consistency in care delivery and adherence to best practices
Quality, Compliance & Collaboration
Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
Support adherence to regulatory, safety, and accreditation standards
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance tracking
Collaborate closely with physicians, nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and support services
Assist in maintaining policies, procedures, and clinical protocols
Required Qualifications
Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or equivalent from an accredited program
Active or eligible North Dakota Physical Therapy license
Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical Physical Therapy experience
Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, or supervisory experience (formal or informal)
Strong clinical evaluation, treatment, and documentation skills
Excellent communication, organizational, and team leadership abilities
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in one or more of the following:
Acute care
Outpatient rehabilitation
Rural or critical access hospital settings
Experience supervising or mentoring PTs, PTAs, or rehab staff
Advanced clinical certifications (e.g., OCS, balance, neuro-focused credentials)
Interest in leadership growth and departmental development
Work Schedule & Environment
