The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) provides specialized instruction and support services to students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or have hearing impairments. This position works collaboratively with general education teachers, special education staff, speech-language pathologists, families, and administrators to ensure students have access to the academic curriculum, communication support, and appropriate educational services.

The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) provides specialized instruction and support services to students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or have hearing impairments. This position works collaboratively with general education teachers, special education staff, speech-language pathologists, families, and administrators to ensure students have access to the academic curriculum, communication support, and appropriate educational services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide specialized instruction and communication support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in individual, small group, and classroom settings
- Develop and manage IEPs, accommodations, transition plans, assessments, progress monitoring, and required documentation
- Collaborate with teachers, families, interpreters, audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and other staff to support student success
- Support the use of spoken language, sign language, assistive technology, hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems, and classroom amplification devices
- Provide staff training on hearing loss, classroom accommodations, and student needs while traveling between school sites as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field preferred
- Valid California Education Specialist Instruction Credential with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) authorization required
- Current California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) authorization required to serve students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, assessments, instructional strategies, and hearing-related student supports
- Strong communication, collaboration, organization, and documentation skills with the ability to work effectively with staff, families, and multidisciplinary teams
- Experience working with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or have multiple disabilities preferred
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf culture, and assistive listening technology such as FM systems, hearing aids, and cochlear implants preferred
- Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance may be required for travel between sites
- Additional requirements may include English Learner Authorization or CLAD certification, fingerprint clearance, TB clearance, background check, and CPR/First Aid certification
- California DHH teachers must hold a valid Education Specialist Instruction Credential with a Deaf and Hard of Hearing authorization issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. This credential authorizes service to students ages birth through 22 with deafness, hearing impairment, deaf-blindness, and related needs.
- Many California programs also require candidates to demonstrate expressive and receptive American Sign Language proficiency and complete coursework specific to deaf education, communication methods, and hearing-related supports.
- Public school DHH teachers are often responsible for IEP participation, educational assessments, consultation with staff, instructional support, and use of hearing-related technology such as FM systems, hearing aids, and cochlear implant equipment.
- Most districts also require fingerprint clearance, TB testing, and a valid California teaching credential with DHH authorization before employment.
