Position Summary
The Head School Nurse provides leadership, coordination, and oversight of the district's comprehensive school health services program. Based in the District Administration Office, the Head School Nurse supervises Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and other assigned health services personnel, ensures compliance with New Jersey statutes and regulations, supports Registered Nurses assigned to schools, develops district-wide health procedures, and provides nursing consultation and services throughout the district.

The Head School Nurse regularly visits all school buildings to monitor health services, support nursing staff, provide clinical oversight, ensure consistency of practice, and collaborate with school administrators regarding student health needs.

Leadership and Supervision

• Supervise and evaluate Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in accordance with district policies.

• Provide clinical direction and oversight to assigned health services personnel.

• Coordinate assignments, scheduling, and coverage for district nursing staff.

• Visit school sites regularly to monitor health office operations and ensure quality of services.

• Mentor newly hired nursing staff.

• Develop and implement standardized district nursing procedures.

Health Services Administration

• Coordinate district-wide student health services.

• Ensure compliance with New Jersey Department of Education requirements, Board of Nursing regulations, and district policies.

• Develop and maintain district health protocols and emergency response procedures.

• Monitor immunization compliance and communicable disease reporting.

• Coordinate medication administration procedures.

• Review and maintain nursing documentation standards.

• Assist with state reporting requirements.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing services when needed.

• Respond to district-wide medical emergencies requiring administrative nursing support.

• Serve as a resource regarding chronic health conditions, individualized healthcare plans, emergency action plans, and Section 504 accommodations.

• Coordinate care for medically fragile students.

• Review physician orders and nursing care plans.

Compliance

• Ensure adherence to:

  • New Jersey School Health Services regulations

  • New Jersey Board of Nursing standards

  • IDEA and Section 504 requirements related to health services

  • FERPA and HIPAA as applicable

  • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard

  • District policies and procedures

Qualifications

• Valid New Jersey Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License.

• New Jersey School Nurse Certificate.

• Minimum of five (3) years of successful nursing experience, including school nursing experience preferred.

• Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

• Demonstrated knowledge of New Jersey school health regulations.

• Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

• Valid New Jersey driver's license with ability to travel between district schools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Nursing, Educational Leadership, Public Health, or related field.

• Experience supervising nursing personnel.

• Experience with special education and medically fragile students.

• Experience developing district health policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to travel among district schools on a daily basis.

• Ability to respond to medical emergencies.

• Ability to lift and move equipment or supplies consistent with school nursing responsibilities.

Work Environment
This position is based at the District Administration Office. The Head School Nurse is expected to travel frequently among all district schools to provide supervision, consultation, program oversight, and direct support to health services staff.
