Texas Special Education Licensure Requirements

A valid Texas teaching certificate with Special Education certification appropriate to the assignment is required.

For the 2026–2027 school year, Texas requires special education teachers to hold a valid special education certificate. Special education teachers who serve as the teacher of record must also hold the appropriate grade-banded content certification for each area in which they are assigned as teacher of record, or meet the applicable Texas content-competency requirements.

Current Texas Special Education Certification

The current Texas certification pathway is:

Special Education Specialist EC–12 — Certificate/Exam 186

The Special Education Specialist EC–12 certification exam launched in September 2025 and is the current special education specialist examination for candidates seeking Special Education EC–12 certification.

Candidates should have an appropriate Texas educator certificate issued through the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and meet all applicable certification, examination, preparation-program, and fingerprinting requirements.

Teacher of Record Requirements

If the Special Education Teacher will serve as a teacher of record, the teacher must meet Texas requirements for the specific grade-banded content area(s) assigned.

If the teacher does not hold the appropriate grade-banded content certification for an assigned content area, the teacher must demonstrate content competency and meet the applicable requirements under Texas Administrative Code §231.701.

Austin, TX

About

The Texas capital is unique, with its unofficial motto, "Keep Austin Weird." Also known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," it hosts over 250 music venues, guaranteeing live performances nearly every night of the week. But if you aren't interested in catching a show, you'll find plenty of other things to do, including spending time outdoors with over 300 sunny days a year. Hike Mount Bonnell for an awe-inspiring view over Lake Austin and the downtown skyline. You can enjoy a refreshing dip in the spring-fed waters at the Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Metropolitan Park, spread over 351 acres with miles and miles of hiking and biking trails. The park is also home to the city's botanical garden, the Austin Nature and Science Center and other attractions. Austin is famous for its food scene, particularly BBQ. Franklin Barbecue, which once served President Obama, is a local favorite.
