Description
ESS Clinical is seeking a compassionate, reliable, and qualified Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) to provide school-based physical therapy services within Carlsbad Municipal Schools during the 2026–2027 school year.
This is a full-time temporary position supporting students with physical, developmental, and mobility needs. The Physical Therapist Assistant will work under the supervision and direction of a licensed Physical Therapist and collaborate with teachers, special education staff, school administrators, families, and other related-service professionals to help students participate successfully in the school environment.
Pay starting at $46/hr up to $52/hr
W-2 and 1099 Opportunities Available

Required Qualifications
- Associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
- Graduation from a Physical Therapist Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) or otherwise approved by the New Mexico Physical Therapy Board.
- Current, active New Mexico Physical Therapist Assistant license required.
- Successful completion of the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for PTAs.
- Successful completion of the New Mexico Physical Therapy Board jurisprudence examination.
- Knowledge of physical therapy principles and practices appropriate to the PTA scope of practice.
- Ability to work under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist.
- Ability to work effectively with children and students with a variety of physical, developmental, and educational needs.
- Strong communication, organization, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary school team.
- Successful completion of required background and fingerprint screening.
- Successful completion of all ESS Clinical and Carlsbad Municipal Schools onboarding requirements.
New Mexico Licensure Requirements
A current, active New Mexico Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) license is required.
The New Mexico Physical Therapy Board requires PTA applicants to:
- Graduate from an accredited PTA program approved by the Board.
- Successfully pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for PTAs.
- Successfully pass the New Mexico jurisprudence examination.
- Submit the required application and supporting documentation.
- Provide official educational transcripts as required.
- Complete required background/DPS authorization procedures.
- Maintain an active New Mexico PTA license throughout employment.
New Mexico's Physical Therapy Board confirms that PTA applicants must graduate from an accredited PTA program and pass the national examination; the state also requires the jurisprudence examination for licensure.
