Position Summary

The School Nurse provides comprehensive nursing services to students in accordance with New Jersey laws, regulations, school district policies, and professional nursing standards. The School Nurse promotes student health and safety by providing direct nursing care, responding to illnesses and injuries, administering medications, monitoring students with acute and chronic health conditions, maintaining accurate health records, and collaborating with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other members of the school community.

The School Nurse works within the assigned school to support the health and well-being of students and help ensure that health-related needs do not interfere with their ability to participate safely and successfully in the educational environment.

Clinical and Student Health Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to students experiencing illness, injury, or other health concerns during the school day.

  • Assess students' health conditions and determine appropriate nursing interventions and follow-up.

  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care as appropriate.

  • Monitor students with acute and chronic health conditions, including diabetes, asthma, seizures, allergies, and other medical needs.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain individualized healthcare plans and emergency action plans as appropriate.

  • Administer medications in accordance with physician orders, parental authorization, New Jersey regulations, and district policies.

  • Monitor students before and after medication administration and document services provided.

  • Perform routine nursing procedures and treatments within the scope of professional licensure.

  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns and follow-up needs.

  • Coordinate with healthcare providers and families regarding medical orders and student health needs as appropriate.

  • Provide health education and promote healthy practices among students and school staff.

  • Support students with special healthcare needs and medically fragile conditions.

Health Office Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and appropriately stocked school health office.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records and nursing documentation.

  • Review student health information, immunization records, physical examination documentation, and other required health records.

  • Assist with monitoring compliance with required school health documentation and immunizations.

  • Maintain appropriate records of medications, treatments, screenings, injuries, illnesses, and other nursing services.

  • Perform health screenings in accordance with applicable requirements and district procedures.

  • Identify and report communicable diseases in accordance with applicable regulations and district procedures.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information.

  • Assist with the development and implementation of emergency response procedures for individual students.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate with teachers, school administrators, counselors, special education staff, related service providers, and other school personnel to support student health and safety.

  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns, injuries, illnesses, and healthcare needs.

  • Participate in meetings regarding students with significant health needs, including IEP, 504, and other school-based meetings as appropriate.

  • Provide guidance to school staff regarding student-specific health concerns and emergency procedures.

  • Coordinate with outside healthcare providers when necessary and permitted.

  • Serve as a health resource for students, families, and school personnel.

Compliance

  • Ensure nursing services are provided in accordance with:

    • New Jersey School Health Services regulations

    • New Jersey Board of Nursing standards and requirements

    • Applicable IDEA and Section 504 requirements related to student health services

    • FERPA and HIPAA requirements, as applicable

    • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard

    • School district policies and procedures

    • Applicable physician orders and individualized healthcare plans

Qualifications

  • Valid New Jersey Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License.

  • New Jersey School Nurse Certificate or eligibility for the appropriate New Jersey school nursing credential.

  • Previous nursing experience required; school nursing experience preferred.

  • Experience working with children or adolescents preferred.

  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a school environment.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound clinical judgment.

  • Current CPR/BLS certification, as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous school nursing experience.

  • Experience working with students with special healthcare needs.

  • Experience caring for medically fragile students.

  • Experience administering medications and managing individualized healthcare plans.

  • Experience working with students with chronic health conditions.

  • Familiarity with New Jersey school health regulations and requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to respond quickly to student medical emergencies.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and move throughout the school environment as needed.

  • Ability to assist students with mobility and other physical needs within the scope of school nursing responsibilities.

  • Ability to lift or move equipment and supplies consistent with school nursing responsibilities.

Work Environment

This position is based within an assigned school building and involves providing nursing services to students throughout the school day. The School Nurse works closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel in a fast-paced educational environment. The position may require responding to medical emergencies, assisting students with physical or medical needs, and managing multiple health-related concerns throughout the school day.
