Description:
- Assist in a variety of surgical procedures/operations under the direct supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse.
- Demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of the surgical environment, principles of infection control, and sterility to support a safe surgical environment.
- Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.
- Maintain a sterile environment according to hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care.
- Perform scrub technician functions for all services and specialties.
- Assemble sterile and non-sterile equipment, ensuring proper working condition.
- During surgery, pass instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgeon and assistants.
- Hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
- Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
- Assist in applying surgical dressings.
- Ensure availability of surgeon and case-specific instrumentation and equipment.
- Assist in transporting and positioning patients on the operating room table.
- Use appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments.
- Understand the specific use and functioning of all supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
- Operate sterilizers, lights, suction, and assist with diagnostic equipment.
- Under direction, accurately and safely prepare and label medications during surgical procedures.
- Assist in transferring patients to the recovery area and may help with turnover and restocking for the next procedure.
- Respect patients' privacy, dignity, and safety, providing a safe environment.
- Participate in orientation of new operating room employees as required.
- Understand teamwork, consideration, and cooperation.
- Work with registered nurse to update and maintain equipment and instrumentation for specialty services.
- Participate in unit staff meetings, in-service programs, and educational programs for career development.
- Perform other related duties and activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Graduate of an accredited civilian or military operating room technician/surgical technician program.
- Certified by an entity accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologists, maintaining certification.
- Current BLS Certification required.
- 2+ years of CVOR experience required.
