Description

Purpose of Position

Provide supervision for the day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. Ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct the day-to-day functions of nursing assistants according to current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing long-term care facilities.
  • Coordinate with assigned nursing staff and support personnel for planning services, programs, and activities.
  • Complete and file required recordkeeping forms/charts upon residents' admission, transfer, and/or discharge.
  • Encourage attending physicians to review treatment plans, record and sign orders, and progress notes according to established policies.
  • Receive and record telephone orders from physicians on the Physicians' Order Form.
  • Transcribe physician's orders to resident charts, cardex, medication cards, and treatment/care plans as required.
  • Inform nursing personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignment, etc.
  • Participate in facility surveys conducted by authorized government agencies as requested.
  • Perform nursing administrative functions as outlined.
  • Participate in the orientation of new residents and family members to the facility.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary and consult on resident care and treatment.
  • Review resident charts for specific treatments, medication orders, and diets as needed.
  • Administer professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings/bandages, and more.
  • Collect samples from patients for testing and conduct routine laboratory tests.
  • Take and record TPRs, blood pressures, and other vital signs as necessary.
  • Check foods brought by residents' family/visitors to ensure they fall within dietary allowances; report issues to the Nurse Supervisor and Dietary Supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information, and adhere to residents' rights.
  • Perform additional work-related duties as assigned or requested.

Education/Experience/Training

  • Must have a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university or be a graduate of an approved LPN program.
  • Must possess a current, unencumbered, active MA LPN license.
  • BLS/CPR and AED Program Certification is required.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English is necessary.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills required to provide care appropriate to the residents' age-related needs.
  • Must be a supportive team member and exemplify teamwork.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when necessary.
  • Capable of dealing tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines related to nursing care facilities.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory abilities and be willing to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and a willingness to handle difficult residents.
  • Must be eager to learn and incorporate new methods and principles into existing nursing practices.
  • Must meet the physical and sensory requirements of the job.
