Purpose of Position
To organize, recruit, and draw blood donors through a program designed to meet the needs of the hospital.
Description
- Ensure the satisfaction of all users of the department's services, both internal and external, according to customer service standards.
- Perform donor screening to ensure eligibility per relevant health and regulatory standards.
- Conduct all aspects of whole blood collections and therapeutic phlebotomy procedures.
- Execute whole blood collections during offsite blood drives and in donor centers.
- Prepare and label blood components and samples for testing.
- Accurately document all blood donor records and data entry, including donor deferrals in the computer system, ensuring all quality control standards are met.
- Assist with donor recruitment.
- Perform daily inventory and replenishment of all donor care supplies as needed and communicate supply needs to the Supervisor or designee.
- Obtain appropriate blood specimens from donors and patients.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of workbenches, testing areas, and other work areas to ensure safety.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures, including fire and disaster plans.
- Consistently provide service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
- Perform other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
Education/Experience/Training
Donor Care Specialist I
- Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- Prior phlebotomy experience required.
- National Certification or completion of an accredited phlebotomy program preferred.
- Basic Life Support certification (BLS).
- Proficiency in using computers/laptops.
Donor Care Specialist II
- DPT (ASCP) Certification, QDP (ASCP).
- Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- One-year experience as a donor phlebotomist preferred.
- Working knowledge of blood groups, Rh types, and donation procedures.
- Basic Life Support certification (BLS) and maintenance of certification.
- Current Donor Phlebotomy Technician, DPT (ASCP) certification or Qualification in Donor Phlebotomy QDP(ASCP) required and must be maintained.
- Proficiency in using computers/laptops.
