Typical Work Activities

• Perform initial health assessments of new inmates, including medical and surgical history, medication history, and review of body systems.
• Review individuals' health histories and compile information relating to general health status.
• Observe symptoms and carry out treatment procedures as ordered.
• Notify the physician of instances requiring medical assessment and treatment.
• Conduct sick calls to determine the priority for medical evaluations.
• Perform Tuberculin skin screenings on all inmates.
• Conduct HIV screenings and offer counseling.
• Arrange for health or mental health referral services for inmates.
• Institute practices to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases in the jail.
• Order medications needed by inmates from a pharmacy and ensure medications are available for administration as ordered.
• Prepare and apply dressings and give therapeutic treatments and rehabilitative measures as authorized.
• Assure adherence to regulations of the NYS Department of Corrections.
• Order and maintain health services equipment and supplies.
• Maintain a log of use and control of DEA-regulated medications.
• Keep a variety of records and reports.
