Schedule includes two 8-hour shifts (1500-2330) and two 12-hour shifts (1100-2330) for a total of 40 hours a week. Holidays and every other weekend availability is expected. Any schedule changes require prior agreement. Charge nurse responsibilities will be part of the role after training. There is potential to float to similar units such as the Inpatient Addiction Rehab Unit.

The unit is a 25-bed acute inpatient psychiatry ward. Staffing typically includes at least 5 personnel for 18-25 patients, with a combination of licensed personnel and Mental Health Assistants (MHAs). For 11-17 patients, at least 4 staff members are required, including 3 licensed staff. One RN functions in a charge nurse role, another in an Admission Nurse role overseeing shift admissions, and a third nurse (RN or LPN) handles medications. RNs are trained for all these roles. There are also 2 float positions typically filled by MHAs, but RNs or LPNs can also be assigned. This role includes tasks such as rounding, taking vitals, distributing trays, facilitating groups, etc. MHAs also receive patient assignments similar to nurses.

Patient population includes individuals with acute psychosis, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicidal ideations, homicidal tendencies, and dual diagnoses. The nurse-to-patient ratio can be up to 5:1 but is often less. As the facility does not have an Emergency Department, emergent medical issues are handled by calling 911 and transferring patients to a nearby ED. Staff must be BLS certified. The facility does not offer seclusion; restraint use is a last resort following the failure of other de-escalation techniques. Restraints are managed by nursing and clinical staff, with security available for backup during crises.
