Purpose of Position
Provide direct nursing care to residents and supervise day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility. Ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct the day-to-day functions of nursing assistants in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern long-term care facilities.
- Meet with assigned nursing staff and support personnel in planning shifts, services, programs, and activities.
- Complete and file required recordkeeping forms/charts upon resident admission, transfer, or discharge.
- Encourage attending physicians to review treatment plans, record and sign their orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with established policies.
- Receive telephone orders from physicians and record them on the Physician's Order Form.
- Transcribe physician’s orders to resident charts, cardex, medication cards, treatment/care plans as required.
- Inform nursing personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignment, etc.
- Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested.
- Perform nursing administrative functions as outlined.
- Participate in the orientation of new residents/family members to the facility.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Consult with the resident’s physician regarding care, treatment, rehabilitation, etc., as necessary.
- Review resident charts for specific treatments, medication orders, diets, etc., as necessary.
- Ensure an adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment is on hand. Report needs to the Nurse Supervisor.
- Administer professional services such as; catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings/bandages, packs, colostomy, and drainage bags, taking blood, giving massages and range of motion exercises, care for the deceased, etc., as required.
- Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests as necessary.
- Take and record TPRs, blood pressures, etc., as necessary.
- Check foods brought into the facility to ensure compliance with dietary allowances. Report problem areas to the Nurse Supervisor and Dietary Supervisor.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure and adhere to Residents' rights.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned or requested.

Education/Experience/Training
- Must possess a minimum of a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university or be a graduate of an approved LPN program.
- BLS/CPR and AED Program Certification is required.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of residents.
- Be a supportive team member, contributing to and exemplifying teamwork and team concepts.
- Possess the ability to make independent decisions.
- Deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
- Be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities.
- Possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
- Plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for providing quality care.
- Possess patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, and be willing to handle difficult residents.
- Seek out new methods and principles and incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
- Relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and meet all other physical and sensory requirements of the job.
