Summary

The individual is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide comprehensive care appropriate to neonates during high-risk deliveries and in a Level-2 nursery. Care is provided in accordance with the philosophy and standards established by the Nursing Service Department, regulatory agencies, and professional organizations. Accountability is held for the safety of the nursing care delivered or supervised, and the quality of direct and indirect care provided to the patient and their family or significant others.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assures patient safety by demonstrating age-appropriate skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and modifies plans of care for patients and families.
  • Manages, directs, and supervises nursing practice, including delegating activities to unlicensed assistive personnel within their scope of practice.
  • Attends in-service and continuing education programs commensurate with job responsibilities.
  • Participates in unit and hospital projects aimed at improving patient care.
  • Represents the organization professionally in interactions.
  • Maintains communication with interdisciplinary practitioners to meet care objectives.
  • Provides patient and family teaching as appropriate.
  • Coordinates activities of multiple disciplines to meet the plan of care.
  • Documents findings and evaluation according to policy.
  • Assumes responsibility for attendance according to policy.
  • Meets requirements for mandatory safety, emergency, and competency in-services and programs.
  • Supports staff development through mentoring, preceptorship, and collegiality.
  • Performs job functions specific to the area.
  • Provides coverage for the Mother/Baby unit and Labor and Delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of previous experience in special care nursing of newborns.

Licensure and Certification

  • Currently licensed to practice professional nursing in Massachusetts.
  • BLS Healthcare Provider certification required.
  • NRP certification required.
