Position Summary:

The Pathologists' Assistant will enhance the Pathology Department's efficiency by performing various tasks, primarily involving the gross examination of surgical pathology specimens and overseeing the autopsy service.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead role in the grossing areas of the department.
• Describe, examine, and prepare surgical specimens for histological processing.
• Assist Residents and technical staff with gross dissections.
• Teach Residents and staff techniques and procedures in the grossing area.
• Assist supervisory staff in optimizing workflow.

Operational Management:

• Manage day-to-day operations of the morgue, aligning with patient care needs, and regulatory standards.
• Exercise independent judgment in technical and administrative decisions in collaboration with the laboratory director(s).
• Oversee project management, budget development and maintenance.
• Manage supplies, resources, and administrative oversight of staffing issues, including hiring, competency assessment, and development.

Autopsy Expertise:

• Provide expertise and leadership in the autopsy service area.
• Assist in autopsy prosection.

Educational Participation:

• Under the direction of a pathologist, participate in all aspects of anatomic pathology.
• Engage in seminars and instruct Residents, medical students, and departmental staff on techniques and protocols in autopsy and surgical pathology.
• Qualified to perform complex surgical resections and autopsies, excluding diagnosis.

Additional Information:

• Participate in project management, and contribute to budget development and maintenance.
• Operational management of morgue, and staffing oversight.
• Contribute to maintaining regulatory and quality standards within the department.
