Description
The physicist will oversee the safety, calibration, testing, and performance of imaging systems including mammography, CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy units. The role also includes quality assurance responsibilities, staff education, and supporting technology procurements.
General Duties:
- Serve as the technical expert in radiation safety, equipment calibration, and diagnostic accuracy.
- Perform diagnostic equipment surveys, data analysis, reporting, and equipment quality control.
- Collaborate with radiologists, technologists, and leadership to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Specific Duties:
- Conduct acceptance testing and routine performance surveys for imaging systems: X-ray, CT, MRI, mammography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and C-arm devices.
- Ensure compliance with FDA, MQSA, and Joint Commission standards.
- Develop and maintain quality control programs for digital radiography (DR) and PACS systems.
- Perform mammography physics services across the National Capital Region.
- Educate radiology staff and residents on radiation safety, technology, and proper equipment usage.
- Prepare technical specifications and evaluate vendor proposals for new imaging systems.
- Support documentation for regulatory audits, including reports and data logs.
- Travel to remote sites within the National Capital Region for equipment testing and surveys.
- Monitor and document calibration activities and initiate maintenance or follow-up actions.
- Participate in department meetings, quality improvement projects, and staff development.
- Assist with CPT coding and billing data for physics services.
Qualifications:
• Education:
- Ph.D. in Medical Physics from an accredited institution.
- Completion of formal education approved by CAHEA/JRCERT.
• Certification:
- Board Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.
- Current BLS Certification (American Heart Association).
• Licensure:
Valid license in one U.S. state to perform diagnostic radiology and mammography physics services.
• Experience:
Minimum 5 years in medical/health physics, including mammography-related services.
• Citizenship:
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Skills and Abilities:
• Extensive knowledge of radiologic imaging systems and performance testing.
• Familiarity with medical imaging software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and written communication skills.
• Ability to manage equipment surveys, interpret data, and produce reports.
• Capable of educating and guiding clinical staff on radiation safety and equipment.
Schedule:
• A normal workweek consists of 40 hours, including weekends and Federal Holidays.
• Between 0600 and 1900 hours
• 8-hour shifts on scheduled workdays
Work Environment:
• Hospital Radiology Department
• Diagnostic and quality control lab settings
• Occasional teaching and committee participation
Immunization Requirement:
Must comply with ATAMMC immunization standards due to hospital-based work.
Security Requirement:
Must pass federal background checks and credentialing.
