Job Overview:
AIMS Locum Tenens is seeking a qualified Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive patient care services at Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center (MOMMC). The Nurse Practitioner will provide comprehensive gastroenterology and hepatology medical services within a military treatment facility.
General Duties:
Provide general screenings, medical care, and detailed examinations for routine, acute, and chronic conditions across all organ systems, with a primary focus on GI and hepatology.
Examine patients, perform initial work-ups, order and interpret laboratory tests, radiology studies, and other diagnostic data to formulate accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
Treat patients returning for routine or directed follow-up of previously documented chronic illnesses. Conduct post-investigation appointments to discuss findings, follow-up care, and timing for future GI procedures.
Provide expert consultation on referrals from Primary Care Managers (PCMs) and collaborate with other specialty services as needed.
Specific Duties:
Perform, assist with, and interpret diagnostic studies within the Gastroenterology Clinic, including but not limited to:
Capsule endoscopy
Esophageal manometry
pH Impedance & BRAVO capsule studies
Liver FibroScan
Diagnostic and therapeutic paracentesis
Provide a full range of emergency services or crisis interventions in the absence of a physician, including lifesaving emergency procedures to stabilize patients.
Monitor and manage chronically ill patients, adjusting treatment regimens within established protocols and recognizing when to escalate care to a gastroenterology physician.
Prescribe medications and immunizations in accordance with approved treatment protocols and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee guidelines.
Deliver pre-procedural instructions and wellness education to patients and families in individual or group settings. Provide technical guidance and clinical teachings to peer staff members.
Maintain meticulous outpatient and inpatient records, including histories, physical exams, diagnostic/therapeutic plans, progress notes, and procedure reports.
Qualifications:
Degree: Master’s degree in Nursing. Graduate from an academic program accredited by the ACEN or CCNE, specializing as an Adult, Internal Medicine, or Family Nurse Practitioner.
Education: Must meet DHA requirements for Nurse Practitioner.
Certification:
Must be certified as an Adult, Internal Medicine, or Family Practice Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant by the ANCC, AANP, or a recognized national certification organization appropriate to the specialty.
Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Experience:
At least 12 months of specialized experience, specifically within Gastroenterology is highly preferred.
Licensure:
Current, full, active, and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in a U.S. state or territory
Board Certification: None required.
DEA registration required.
Skills and Abilities:
Proficient understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, medical ethics, legal concepts, and risk management.
Mastery of clinical procedures, aseptic technique, specimen collection, vaccination protocols, and automated medical records/basic word processing.
Expert knowledge of the mechanisms of anaphylaxis and shock, alongside their immediate emergency treatments.
Absolute compliance with universal precautions, infection control, and isolation protocols.
Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts between 6 am and 6 pm
To meet clinic coverage requirements, a flexible schedule may be implemented, including the option of working 10-hour shifts
Work Environment:
Clinical setting within a Military Treatment Facility (MTF).
Gastroenterology specialty clinic.
Collaborative, multidisciplinary healthcare team environment.
Immunization Requirement:
Must meet all Department of Defense and facility-specific immunization requirements.
Security Requirement:
Must be eligible to work on a federal installation and pass background/security clearance.
