Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Travel Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse (PCU RN) to provide specialized nursing care to patients who require closer monitoring than a general medical-surgical unit but do not require full intensive care. The PCU RN monitors patients closely, manages complex conditions, administers medications and treatments, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive assessments of PCU and step-down patients.
Monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygenation, neurological status, and other clinical indicators.
Interpret cardiac rhythms and recognize changes requiring intervention.
Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other treatments as ordered.
Manage and monitor IV lines, central lines, drains, and other medical devices.
Care for patients receiving oxygen therapy and other respiratory support.
Monitor patients for changes in condition and promptly escalate concerns.
Assist with rapid response and emergency interventions when necessary.
Develop and implement individualized nursing care plans.
Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
Provide patient and family education regarding medications, treatments, and discharge planning.
Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records.
Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and patient handoffs.
Follow infection-control, patient-safety, and hospital protocols.
Common PCU Patient Population

Depending on the facility, PCU nurses may care for patients with:

Cardiac conditions and dysrhythmias
Chest pain and cardiac monitoring needs
Respiratory disorders
COPD exacerbations
Pneumonia
Sepsis
Post-operative complications
Stroke and neurological conditions
Diabetes and other complex medical conditions
Patients transitioning from the ICU
Patients requiring telemetry and closer monitoring
Requirements
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of assignment.
Recent PCU, Step-Down, Progressive Care, Telemetry, or Critical Care experience.
Current BLS certification.
ACLS certification required by many facilities.
Strong cardiac rhythm interpretation skills.
Experience with telemetry monitoring, IV medications, and complex patient care.
Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to recognize and respond quickly to changes in patient condition.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Additional certifications may be required depending on the facility.
