Correctional Registered Nurse (RN) 

Contract Duration: 13 to 26 weeks
Evening Shift (2:00 PM – 10:30 PM)

Job Overview:

Provide professional nursing care to inmates and detainees within Commonwealth correctional facilities. Support the healthcare team in delivering quality, safe, and compassionate services under supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

• Act as a Charge Nurse, Staff Nurse, or Assessment Coordinator:

  • Charge Nurse: Lead nursing care, supervise staff, assess resource needs, and ensure proper documentation and coordination.
  • Assessment Coordinator: Develop and evaluate individualized care plans, coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, and meet with residents and families.
  • Staff Nurse: Deliver direct nursing care, manage specialty areas such as infection control, quality improvement, and risk management.

• Follow assigned tasks through oral or written instructions, exercising independent judgment within nursing standards.

• Work is overseen by RN supervisors, physicians, or dentists to ensure quality and compliance.

Required Skills & Competencies:

• Clinical Skills:

  • Airway management, CPR, first aid, AED
  • Catheter care/insertion, oxygen therapy, IV therapy, medication administration (oral, topical, injectable, suppositories)
  • Vital signs, respiratory care (ventilator, suctioning, oxygen masks, peak flow, pulse oximetry)
  • Wound and decubitus care, dressing changes, sterile techniques
  • Specialized procedures: nasogastric/gastrostomy tube insertion and feeding, ostomy, suture removal, NG irrigation
  • Use of medical equipment: Ambu bag, glucometer, EKG, blood pressure monitor, nebulizer, nephrostomy care
  • Neurological checks, full body assessment, Plan of Care development

• Testing & Documentation:

  • Tuberculin skin testing, audiogram, telebinocular testing
  • Maintain accurate documentation on Medication Administration Records, orders, and assessments
  • Use of restraints, specimen collection, and sterile techniques

• Always operate within established nursing standards and protocols.
