Medical Surgical RN Job Details

- Facility Type: Acute Care Hospital, Level I Trauma Center

- Unit: Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg)
- Shift: Day shifts, 3x12-hour (06:45 - 19:15)
- Shifts per Week: 3
- Hours per Week: 36
- Duration: 13 weeks (Start: 1/26/2026 – End: 4/27/2026)
- Weekend Coverage: Weekend-only shifts (Saturday, Sunday, Monday block schedule)
- Patient Population: Adults & Geriatrics
- Average Daily Census: 21 patients
- Charting System: Cerner EMR
- Scrub Color: Any solid color
- Parking: Free with permit
Registered Nurse Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of recent Medical Surgical RN experience (Med/Surg nursing jobs)
- Active Illinois RN license or in application process
- BLS certification (AHA or Red Cross)
- IV therapy and phlebotomy skills: blood product administration, peripheral line care, PICC line management
- Experience with isolation precautions and infection control
- Ability to float within hospital and to affiliate hospitals
- Must be able to work 2 out of 3 major holidays if assignment overlaps
- First-time travel nurses accepted
Med/Surg RN Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in a busy Medical Surgical unit
- Administer blood products, manage peripheral and PICC lines, and perform IV therapy
- Implement isolation precautions and infection control protocols
- Monitor and document patient status using Cerner EMR system
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams: Physical Therapy, Respiratory Services, Pharmacy, Social Services
- Float to other units or affiliate hospitals as needed
- Participate in rapid response/code teams
- Care for patients with diagnoses including GI bleed, bowel obstruction, colon cancer, diverticulitis, cholecystitis, alcohol withdrawal, appendicitis, pancreatitis
- Perform special procedures: TPN administration, NG insertion, tube feedings, medication drips (Heparin, Amiodarone, Lasix)
