Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Med/Surg Tele (Oncology-Focused Acute Care Float Pool) | Night Shift

Travel RN job in Columbus, Ohio: Bring your high-acuity Med/Surg Telemetry expertise to a dynamic oncology-focused acute care float pool supporting specialized adult inpatient units within a hospital health system. In this travel Registered Nurse (RN) role, you’ll primarily support Med/Surg Tele oncology-focused units; float assignments may also include PCU oncology units as needed, with a strong focus on infection prevention, fall reduction, and safe, evidence-based practice.

Located in Columbus, OH 43210, you’ll be based near a lively, walkable area close to major campuses, local coffee shops and dining, museums, and green spaces—an ideal home base for exploring one of the Midwest’s most vibrant cities between shifts.

  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling requests considered; final schedule balanced by unit needs (no blocked scheduling)
  • Weekends: Variable based on unit needs
  • Float Requirement: Float to Med/Surg oncology-focused units; float may include PCU oncology-focused units (e.g., bone marrow transplant, acute leukemia, hematology, medical oncology, gynecologic oncology, urology, colorectal, surgical oncology, and more)
  • Patient Population: Adults & Geriatrics
  • Charting System: Epic (experience required)
  • Orientation: First week Mon–Fri days; additional bedside orientation before independent practice

Registered Nurse (RN) Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of high-acuity Med/Surg Telemetry (or higher) experience within the most recent 3 years
  • Specialty Requirement: At least 1 year of current Med/Surg Tele specialty experience
  • Travel Experience: Required (travel nursing / travel RN)
  • Licensure: Active RN license (compact or state license accepted, as applicable)
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS (active and in good standing)
  • Preferred: Inpatient oncology experience (helpful, not required)
  • Clinical Skills: Telemetry interpretation/dysrhythmia management; rapid response/code team activation; central line/PICC care; port access/management; blood product administration; heparin protocols; PCA; chest tubes; surgical drains; feeding tube care; oxygen delivery modalities (including HFNC, BiPAP/CPAP); isolation precautions/PPE
  • References: Two professional references required; at least 1 from a manager/director or formal leader (charge RN acceptable for 2nd reference; no coworker-only references)

Med/Surg Tele Travel RN Responsibilities (Oncology-Focused Acute Care Float Pool)

  • Deliver safe, evidence-based acute care nursing for Med/Surg Tele oncology patients while floating across specialized inpatient units (float may include PCU oncology units as needed)
  • Continuously monitor telemetry, recognize rhythm changes, and escalate appropriately using rapid response/code resources
  • Administer medications, blood products, and IV therapies per protocol, including anticoagulation and other high-alert treatments
  • Support complex oncology-related care needs while maintaining strong infection control and fall-risk reduction practices
  • Manage lines, drains, and devices (e.g., central lines, PICCs, ports, chest tubes, PCA pumps, feeding tubes, oxygen devices)
  • Document accurately in Epic and communicate clearly with the interdisciplinary team (IV team, respiratory, PT, pharmacy, social services, and more)
  • Maintain professionalism, adaptability, and patient-centered care in a fast-paced float environment
