Job Requirements / Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 2 years RN experience on a pediatric vascular access team or relevant clinical areas (Heme/Onc, ICU, ED, PICU).
- Clinical Skills: Proficiency in ultrasound-guided peripheral IV placement and vein finder use (ultrasound used for ~75% of insertions).
- Vascular Access Skills: Experience with PICC lines, implanted ports, site/vessel selection, insertion support, patency assessment, and vascular access troubleshooting.
- Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in hand (required at submission; no exceptions).
- Certifications: BLS required. Pediatric certifications or vascular access certifications are a plus.
- References: Two professional references from two of the last three employers (from different facilities).
- Vaccination Policy: COVID-19 and influenza vaccines required (medical/religious exemptions accepted).
- Candidate Types: First-time travel nurses accepted; local candidates within 50 miles accepted at a lower rate.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform ultrasound-guided peripheral IV insertions and manage difficult IV access for pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients — pediatric IV therapy nurse responsibilities.
- Float throughout the hospital to provide vascular access support and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (nurses, physicians, radiology).
- Assess vasculature and recommend the most appropriate vascular access device (PICC, peripheral IV, implanted port) based on patient condition and therapy needs.
- Monitor IV sites, assess patency, troubleshoot access issues, and provide timely interventions to maintain device function and reduce complications.
- Support insertion procedures, maintain supplies, and uphold sterile technique following unit protocols and infection control standards.
- Document care accurately in Epic and ensure high-quality patient outcomes and compliance with documentation standards.
- Adopt and model unit policies, clinical standards, and best practices as a vascular access specialist and pediatric IV therapy RN.
