Cardiac Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) Travel RN opportunity in Madison, WI — ideal for experienced telemetry and progressive care nurses with 2+ years of acute care experience, ACLS/BLS, and Epic charting. Job Details
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $2130 - $2250
- Location: University Hospital, Madison, WI 53792 (Madison, Wisconsin – near downtown lakes and outdoor recreation)
- Assignment Duration: 13 weeks (April 20, 2026 – July 20, 2026)
- Shift: 12 Hour Nights (7:00pm – 7:30am); Monday–Friday with every other weekend and some holidays required
- Hours per Week: 36
- Unit: IMC Acute Med/Progressive Care and IMC Thoracic (Cardiac Stepdown / PCU / IMC)
- Patient Population: Adults, 29-bed unit – cardiac telemetry, post-transplant, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, and complex medical-surgical patients
Travel RN / Cardiac Stepdown Job Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of acute care experience within the last 3 years in cardiac/telemetry, progressive care, or stepdown settings
- Travel RN experience required
- WI RN license or compact RN license required (must be in hand at submittal)
- ACLS and BLS certifications (AHA required)
- Strong MS/Telemetry experience required (Telemetry RN / Cardiac nursing)
- Telemetry oncology, cardiac PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown experience preferred
- Ventilator and transplant experience required (post-lung transplant care experience highly valued)
- Trauma Level I or II experience required
- Epic electronic charting experience required
- Must pass a telemetry exam prior to start (strict passing criteria)
- Flu vaccine required (medical/religious exemptions only)
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive, specialized nursing care to acutely ill adult patients with multiple comorbidities and hemodynamic instability in a cardiac stepdown/IMC setting
- Manage cardiac telemetry monitoring, interpret dysrhythmias, and titrate cardiac drips per protocol (Telemetry RN / Cardiac nursing skills)
- Care for specialty populations including cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, and post-lung transplant patients
- Perform and manage IV insulin protocols, titration of insulin drips, feeding tube care, continuous bladder irrigation, and renal failure/hemodialysis pre/post care
- Access and manage ports, arterial lines, PICC lines; administer blood products; follow heparin and PCA protocols; provide procedural sedation support
- Provide ventilator care and manage ventilated patients in collaboration with respiratory therapy
- Participate in rapid response/code teams and provide trauma care including ortho trauma, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury
- Perform wound care and wound VAC management, post-transplant nursing care, and complex medical-surgical interventions
- Float between IMC/Thoracic/PCU units as needed to meet staffing needs and provide continuity of care
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams — IV teams, physical therapy, respiratory services, pharmacy, social services, and physicians — to coordinate patient-centered care
