Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Central Sterile Processing, Surgical Technologist, or Sterile Processing Technician roles (SPD)
  • National sterile processing certification required (examples: IAHCSMM CRCST or CBSPD certification)
  • Eligible to work in Illinois and hold appropriate state or national licensure/certification
  • Ability to meet productivity goal of ~800 instruments processed per shift (mix of small and large trays)
  • Must not have worked at any University of Chicago location in the past 7 months (traveler restriction)
  • Willingness to work rotating weekends and assigned holidays
  • Legal first and last name required for submission
  • Completion of orientation and annual training modules (average 5 hours, non-billable)

Key Responsibilities

  • Process, decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments and trays following hospital SPD policies and infection control standards
  • Achieve productivity targets by efficiently processing a mix of small and large surgical trays to reach ~800 instruments per shift
  • Operate sterilizers (autoclaves), ultrasonic cleaners, and other SPD equipment safely and accurately
  • Maintain accurate sterilization logs, tray counts, and instrument tracking documentation
  • Collaborate with OR, nursing, and perioperative teams to ensure timely delivery of sterile supplies for cases
  • Adhere to AAMI and facility standards for sterilization, handling, and storage of sterile items
  • Participate in orientation, competency assessments, and annual training modules
  • Work assigned night shifts, rotating weekends, and holidays as scheduled
