Job Details
- Assignment Length: 13 weeks
- Location: Austin, TX 78705 (Central Austin – near parks, restaurants, live music)
- Role: Travel Lab Tech / Medical Laboratory Technician – Microbiology (On-site)
- Setting: Acute Care Hospital, Clinical Microbiology Lab
- Shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, 8-hour day shifts
- Weekly Hours: 40
- Estimated Weekly Pay: $1,350 – $1,460
- Start Date: April 20, 2026
Job Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of laboratory experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory (hospital lab tech, medical laboratory technician/technologist)
- Medical Technologist (MT/MLS) certification required (ASCP preferred)
- Hands-on experience with plate reading, culture set-ups, and Gram stains
- Experience with MALDI-TOF, automated AST systems (Microscan), and MALDI-based identification preferred
- Familiarity with rapid molecular platforms and point-of-care kits (BioFire, Cepheid GeneXpert, Liat, Sofia, Solana)
- Experience with Bactec or other blood culture systems
- Meditech EMR experience preferred for documentation and reporting
- Ability to work rotating weekends as needed
- Strong teamwork, flexibility, multi-tasking, and quick learning in a fast-paced clinical microbiology environment
- Dress code: sage green scrub top and black bottoms
Responsibilities
- Perform microbiology procedures including specimen processing, Gram stains, culture inoculation, and plate reading
- Run and maintain advanced laboratory analyzers and molecular platforms (BioFire, Cepheid, Liat, Sofia, Solana, MALDI-TOF, Microscan, Bactec)
- Conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) workflows and assist with automated AST systems
- Perform rapid kit testing and process specimens following CLIA and hospital lab protocols
- Accurately document results and maintain patient records within Meditech EMR
- Collaborate with a team of 5–6 plate readers and processors during day shifts to ensure timely reporting
- Maintain quality control, participate in QA practices, and uphold lab safety standards
- Adapt to changing priorities in a busy acute care microbiology lab
