Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of critical care nursing experience (PACU, ER, or ICU experience accepted)
  • Valid RN license in the state of Hawaii (must be obtained by assignment start date)
  • BLS and ACLS certified (American Heart Association)
  • PALS certification recommended and may be required for select assignments
  • Specialty certifications (NIHSS, TNCC) preferred and may be required
  • Proof of flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required prior to start
  • Travel nurses must arrive in Hilo the Thursday before assignment start for employee health clearance

Key Responsibilities — PACU / Post-Anesthesia Care

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care in pre-op, Phase I and Phase II recovery following anesthesia and surgery
  • Assess and monitor incision sites, vital signs, pain management, and other indicators of patient stability
  • Utilize advanced critical care skills to manage post-anesthesia emergencies and unstable patients
  • Administer and document medications; manage PCA pumps and utilize Pyxis and Braun IV pumps
  • Document patient care in Meditech and monitor via HP and Philips monitors
  • Collaborate with surgical, anesthesia, and perioperative teams to promote safe patient recovery
  • Participate in scheduled on-call rotations (0–3 times/month; may include 8-hr night or 24-hr weekend/holiday shifts)

Clinical Tools & Experience

  • Experience with PCA pumps, Pyxis, Braun IV pumps, Cryocuff, SCDs, Bair Paws warmers
  • Comfortable using Meditech and standard perioperative monitoring equipment
  • Strong assessment, communication, and emergency response skills in the post-anesthesia setting
