Job Details

• Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,800 - $1,890
• Location: Portsmouth, VA 23707 — Virginia travel nurse assignment
• Role: Travel Psychiatric RN / Inpatient Psychiatric Nurse
• Setting: Adult Inpatient Behavioral Health (Locked Unit)
• Shift: 12-hour nights (7:00pm – 7:30am); every other weekend and holiday
• Duration: 13 weeks (Start: 7/6/2026 – End: 10/3/2026)
• Hours Per Week: 36
• Patient Population: Adults (18+), primarily ER admissions
• RN-to-Patient Ratio: 1:8; always 2 RNs on staff
• Additional Requirements: State registration and fingerprinting required after acceptance

Qualifications / Job Requirements

• Active RN license in Virginia or a compact state (required) — ideal for travel RN and Virginia nursing jobs candidates
• BLS certification (required prior to direct patient care)
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience (required)
• 2 years recent behavioral health and acute care experience (preferred)
• 6–12 months recent EPIC EHR experience (preferred)
• De-escalation training and CPI certification (preferred)
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled
• Locals within 50 miles are not accepted for this travel assignment

Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive psychiatric nursing care using assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation — Psychiatric RN responsibilities in an inpatient behavioral health setting
• Manage the milieu to maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for adults in a locked unit
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (psychiatrists, therapists, social workers) to develop individualized treatment plans
• Perform and document nursing assessments of physical and behavioral health status
• Communicate assessment findings and care plan updates to the care team and next shift
• Use effective interviewing and therapeutic communication skills with patients and families
• Participate in safe patient management using therapeutic prevention and intervention techniques
• Advocate for patient dignity, safety, and culturally sensitive care
• Support patients and families in coping with behavioral health challenges and care transitions
• Maintain professionalism, resilience, and adherence to facility policies in high-stress situations
