Postpartum Registered Nurse (RN) – Mother/Baby Unit | 13-Week Contract in Midlothian, VA

Postpartum RN Job Details

• Location: Midlothian, Virginia, near Richmond

• Start Date: October 5, 2026
• Contract Duration: 13 weeks, ending January 4, 2027
• Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour day shifts
• Shift Duration: 12 hours; 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• Hours: 36 hours per week
• Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and major holidays as scheduled
• Call: Up to two shifts per six-week period
• Unit Environment: 24-bed Mother/Baby unit with couplet-care ratios of approximately 1 nurse to 3–4 couplets
• Patient Population: Mothers, newborns, and infants, including newborns 28 weeks gestation and above

Postpartum Registered Nurse Requirements

• At least 1 year of Registered Nurse (RN) experience required
• Recent postpartum, obstetric, emergency department, or critical care nursing experience preferred
• Current Registered Nurse license in Virginia or a valid compact-state license
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required
• Inpatient obstetric, maternal-newborn, electronic fetal monitoring, or neonatal nursing certification preferred
• Strong patient assessment, prioritization, communication, and patient-education skills
• Ability to provide safe, evidence-based nursing care to mothers and newborns while recognizing changes in clinical condition
• Comfort working collaboratively with patients, families, providers, and support staff
• Experience with electronic health records; Epic experience is helpful

Postpartum RN Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to postpartum patients and newborns through discharge.
• Deliver couplet care for mothers and newborns transitioning after delivery.
• Complete initial and ongoing maternal-newborn assessments, develop individualized plans of care, and evaluate patient outcomes.
• Monitor maternal and newborn conditions, identify changes in status, and initiate appropriate interventions or escalation.
• Administer medications and treatments safely in accordance with applicable standards, policies, and procedures.
• Support breastfeeding, newborn care, maternal recovery, and family bonding through education and compassionate guidance.
• Provide self-care, infant-care, discharge, follow-up, and safety education to patients and families.
• Perform or assist with electronic fetal monitoring, maternal-newborn assessments, resuscitation, and stabilization as appropriate to the assignment.
• Possibly float to a special care nursery to care for stable grower/feeder infants without respiratory support.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate services, promote patient safety, and support quality outcomes.
• Advocate for patients and families while applying culturally responsive, inclusive, and relationship-based care.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and protect patient privacy and safety.
