Travel RN Job Details

• Nursing Specialty: Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) / Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)
• Job Type: Travel Registered Nurse contract
• Location: Chesapeake, Virginia, in Coastal Virginia
• Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,910–$2,010
• Start Date: November 16, 2026
• Contract Length: 13 weeks, with possible extension
• Schedule: Three 12-hour day shifts per week, 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.; four 12-hour shifts may also be available
• Hours: Approximately 36 hours per week
• Patient Population: Adults, including postoperative CABG, acute coronary syndrome, NSTEMI, STEMI, and CHF patients
• Patient Ratios: Typically 1:1–2 on days and up to 1:2 on nights and weekends
• Unit Model: Universal-bed model; ICU nurses also care for step-down patients who remain in the CTICU through discharge
• Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and required holidays; travelers must work two of the three winter holidays
• Orientation: Approximately 24 hours

CTICU Travel Nurse Requirements

• Active Virginia or Compact Registered Nurse license in hand at the time of submission
• At least 2 years of recent CVICU or CTICU nursing experience
• Previous travel nursing experience preferred
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications through the American Heart Association
• Current NIH Stroke Scale certification
• Proficiency with Epic electronic health records
• Strong cardiac rhythm interpretation and critical-care assessment skills
• Ability to successfully complete required cardiac rhythm testing with a score of at least 80%
• Comfort caring for high-acuity cardiac, surgical, neurological, ventilated, and step-down patients
• Applicants must meet applicable travel eligibility requirements, including the minimum-distance rule for local candidates

Cardiothoracic ICU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care for critically ill adult cardiothoracic and cardiovascular patients
• Care for patients following CABG, cardiac surgery, cardiac catheterization, and other cardiovascular interventions
• Monitor and manage arterial lines, central lines, PICCs, pulmonary artery lines, IABP, Impella, FloTrac/Vigileo, and other advanced hemodynamic monitoring equipment
• Titrate cardiac, vasoactive, sedative, and insulin infusions according to established protocols
• Manage ventilated patients and assist with BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, suctioning, ABG interpretation, and ventilator care
• Provide care for patients with CVA, acute stroke, EVD or ventriculostomy needs, dysrhythmias, and multisystem organ failure
• Support CRRT/CVVHD, blood product administration, procedural sedation, and complex postoperative recovery
• Recognize and respond to changes in cardiac rhythms, neurological status, respiratory function, and hemodynamic stability
• Maintain infection prevention standards, isolation precautions, and safe use of personal protective equipment
• Collaborate with respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, rapid response, IV, and other interdisciplinary teams
• Float between ICU and step-down assignments within the universal-bed model as needed
• Participate in weekend, holiday, and floating requirements throughout the contract
