Join our healthcare team as an experienced PCU travel nurse caring for complex cardiac patients on a 13-week night-shift contract in Charleston, WV. This progressive care nursing opportunity focuses on post-operative open-heart and cardiothoracic recovery while helping you strengthen critical-care skills and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team. Travel RN Job Details
- Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Cardiac Step-Down Nursing
- Location: Charleston, West Virginia
- Contract: 13 weeks
- Start Date: October 29, 2026
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,680–$1,770
- Shift Duration: 12-hour night shifts
- Schedule: 3 or 4 shifts per week, 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.; 36 hours guaranteed
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Unit: 29-bed progressive care unit supporting post-operative open-heart, cardiothoracic, and medical-surgical overflow patients
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatrics
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 4:1
- Charting: Cerner
- Orientation: 16 hours, held every other Thursday
- Additional Scheduling: Blocked schedule requests may be considered; clinicians may float within their scope of practice to support patient-care needs
PCU Travel Nurse Job Requirements
- At least 2 years of recent Registered Nurse experience in a PCU, progressive care, cardiac, or closely related acute-care setting
- Current Registered Nurse license in West Virginia or a valid Compact RN license; pending licensure may be considered for submission
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association
- Demonstrated experience with telemetry, cardiac monitoring, and interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Experience assisting with chest tube insertion and performing chest tube management and removal
- Central line experience
- Experience with external and internal pacemakers and wound vacs
- Ability to manage complex cardiac and critical-care infusions, including amiodarone, Cardizem, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, dopamine, and argatroban
- Previous charge nurse experience is preferred
- Strong communication, clinical judgment, teamwork, and adaptability in a high-acuity healthcare environment
Progressive Care Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to post-operative open-heart and cardiothoracic patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring
- Assess patients, recognize changes in condition, and promptly escalate concerns using sound clinical judgment
- Interpret telemetry and manage dysrhythmias in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team
- Monitor and manage complex cardiac and critical-care infusions within scope and facility protocols
- Assist with chest tube insertion and provide ongoing chest tube care, troubleshooting, and removal
- Manage central lines, external and internal pacemakers, wound vacs, and other specialized equipment
- Administer medications and treatments while maintaining accurate documentation in Cerner
- Care for medical-surgical overflow patients as assigned
- Collaborate with respiratory therapy, IV services, rehabilitation, radiology, phlebotomy, social services, and other members of the care team
- Float within demonstrated competency to meet patient-care needs and support unit operations
