Psychiatric Registered Nurse Job Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
• At least 2 years of recent psychiatric nursing or behavioral health nursing experience
• Comfort working in a busy, fast-paced acute psychiatric environment
• Ability to float between psychiatric units and adapt to changing patient care needs
• Strong teamwork, communication, therapeutic communication, and de-escalation skills
• Willingness to care for patients who may display aggression or require physical holds in accordance with facility policy and training
• Handle with Care certification required; onsite certification may be provided

Psychiatric RN Responsibilities

• Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to adult psychiatric patients across multiple behavioral health units
• Complete patient assessments, with an expected daily volume of approximately 10–15 assessments
• Administer medications and manage the medication cart according to established protocols
• Support patient admissions, discharges, transfers, and ongoing treatment planning
• Monitor patients with depression, suicidal ideation, severe mental illness, and detoxification needs
• Float between psychiatric units based on census and staffing requirements
• Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly to the care team
• Use therapeutic communication, crisis intervention, and approved safety techniques to promote a secure treatment environment
• Collaborate with nurses, providers, behavioral health staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team
