Join a collaborative surgical care team as a Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse on a 13-week travel nursing contract in Wilmington, North Carolina. Care for adult surgical patients in a 12-bed Surgical Short Stay unit while enjoying Wilmington’s welcoming coastal setting, vibrant riverfront, historic charm, and nearby beaches.
Travel Nursing Job Details
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,660–$1,750
- Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
- Contract: 13 weeks
- Start Date: October 26, 2026
- Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 36 hours per week
- Shift: 12-hour nights, 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
- Patient Population: Adults with a variety of surgical diagnoses
- Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:6
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend; approximately 12 weekend night shifts during the contract
- Floating: May be required to support inpatient surgery floors, inpatient holding areas, or medical-surgical units
- Orientation: 24 hours
Medical-Surgical RN Job Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse license in North Carolina or a compact state
- At least 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience
- Previous Surgical Short Stay or 23-hour observation unit experience required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications
- Recent experience caring for adult surgical patients
- Proficiency with Epic electronic health records preferred
- Previous charge nurse experience preferred
- Comfort caring for a 1:6 patient assignment and floating as needed
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and required holidays
- Ability to complete required pre-start testing and education within designated timelines
Medical-Surgical Nursing Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult patients before and after surgical procedures
- Monitor patients recovering from anesthesia and manage short-stay admissions of less than 24 hours
- Care for patients undergoing colorectal, general, gynecologic, neurologic, orthopedic, plastic, urologic, vascular, thoracic, and other surgical procedures
- Perform focused nursing assessments, administer medications, monitor telemetry, and recognize changes in patient condition
- Manage IV therapy, blood products, PCA, insulin protocols, surgical drains, feeding tubes, tracheostomies, and continuous bladder irrigation as applicable
- Provide wound care, including management of surgical wounds and wound vacuum systems
- Use clinical judgment to escalate concerns and activate rapid response or emergency interventions when indicated
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, IV services, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team
- Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in the electronic health record
- Promote a safe, compassionate, and efficient patient experience throughout the perioperative and short-stay process
