Travel PACU / Pre-Op Registered Nurse (RN) – 13-Week Contract in Ithaca, NY

Join a fast-paced perioperative nursing team as a PACU / Pre-Op Registered Nurse supporting surgical patients throughout preparation, recovery, and transition of care. This on-site travel nursing assignment is based in a community hospital with seven operating rooms and a diverse range of surgical specialties, including neuro, plastics, ENT, breast, general, gynecology, urology, orthopedics, vascular, and endoscopy.

  • Schedule: Variable 12.5-hour shifts, including approximately 6:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m., 7:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m., 8:00 a.m.–8:30 p.m., and 9:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
  • Call Requirement: Approximately 3–4 weeknight call shifts and one 24-hour weekend call during an 8-week period; call needs may vary based on staffing
  • Weeknight Call: 9:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
  • Weekend Call: 7:00 a.m.–7:00 a.m.
  • Holiday Coverage: Holiday call may be required

PACU / Pre-Op RN Job Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse license eligible for practice in New York
  • Current experience caring for patients before and after surgical procedures
  • Strong patient assessment, triage, airway monitoring, and post-anesthesia recovery skills
  • Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition
  • Ability to work variable day and evening shifts, overnight call, weekend call, and holiday call as assigned
  • Completion of required clinical competency assessments and onboarding documentation
  • Professional references and employment verification

PACU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for surgical procedures by completing assessments, verifying readiness, and providing pre-operative education
  • Monitor patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) during emergence and recovery from anesthesia
  • Assess airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and pain status following procedures
  • Administer medications and treatments according to orders and established protocols
  • Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition or post-operative complications
  • Provide perioperative nursing care across a broad surgical service line, including neuro, plastics, ENT, breast, general, gynecology, urology, orthopedics, vascular, and endoscopy
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia professionals, perioperative nurses, and other members of the healthcare team
  • Complete accurate documentation, handoffs, discharge instructions, and patient education
  • Participate in scheduled call coverage and provide timely support for urgent surgical and recovery needs
